It wasn't entirely obvious until Dexter: Resurrection episode 8 whether the police ever verified Aaron Spender's death following the events of Original Sin's ending. After learning that Spencer, his old supervisor at Miamo Metro Police Department, had abducted and tortured his own son, Dexter took care of him. After all those years, NYPD Detective Wallace found stories on Spencer in Resurrection that verified he was still "missing" and had never been declared deceased. This suggests that when Dexter disposed of his body in the ocean off the coast of Miami in the 1990s, it was never recovered.
