Diabetes drug leads to significant weight loss in obesity patients

Overweight people who participated in a 72-week scientific study led by scientists from the USA-based Yale University lost remarkable weight after the medication they were given and used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. Subjects using the drug lost an average of 16 to 22.5 percent of their body weight. The drug helped 9 out of 10 people lose weight.

At the symposium of the American Diabetes Association held on June 4, Dr. As a result of the scientific study presented by Ania M. Jastreboff, overweight and obesity patients who participated in the experiment lost an average of 16 to 22.5 percent of their body weight after using Type 2 diabetes medication. The study included 2,539 participants without diabetes, who were obese or overweight.

One group participating in the study was given a placebo (ineffective drug) once a week for 72 weeks, while the other three groups were given 5mg, 10mg and 15mg doses of the drug. All participants were also assisted with regular lifestyle counseling sessions to help them stick to a low-calorie diet and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week.

At the end of 72 weeks, those who took 5 mg of the drug lost about 16 kilos, while those who took the 15 mg dose lost about 24 kilos. Those who took the placebo dose lost just 2.4 pounds.

9 out of 10 PEOPLE LOSE WEIGHT

The findings showed that the drug could be a potential weight loss option for individuals living with obesity, with participants losing 16 percent to 22.5 percent of their weight.

It was stated that those who took the highest dose of the participants lost up to 24 kilos. Dr. Ania M. Jastreboff said of the scientific study, “These results represent an important step forward in the potentially expanding range of effective treatment options for people with obesity. In particular, about 9 out of 10 people with obesity lost weight while taking the drug.
