Diablo 3: Theorycrafting in 5 steps.
7This is how I usually theorycraft in Diablo 3. For a quick summary, read below.
►Step 1, Figure out the theory.
Choose a skill or item that you want to build toward to. This idea will most likely be your main skill used.
►Step 2, Research Gear
Hit up the Diablo 3 Item guide (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/) and start gathering the best legendaries or sets that may synergize with the build. Make a list.
►Step 3, Itemize
Look through the gear, choose the best one. Look for what is the most constant in damage, or synergizes the best. If you're unable to make a choice, try dipping into the skills or passives and see if that helps sway the decision. I go through this process a bit in 2:20. After the core gear is in place, naturally the obvious things like trifecta, three socket chests and other mandatory stats will fall into the unused gear slots.
►Step 4, Build the build
With the gear in place , it's time to build the build. I follow the template of 2-3 damage skills, 1 escape, 1 buff and 1 Elite clear. Passives are different between most classes but there are usually 2-3 that are mandatory based on weapon, role and build. Make sure to see if skills have more than one purpose and have the ability to be used in any sort of situation. This is very important for Hardcore players.
►Step 5, Share it.
You theorycrafted the build, now you have to pass it along to others. If you theorycrafted, you don't usually have the items that are used. You create the build based on knowledge of mechanics, statistics and synergy. So passing this along to others who can test it and give feedback is important for both you and other people who may want to adopt the build.
