Did No Vacancy Deserve to Win?
As kids, many of us watched School of Rock and rooted for Dewey Finn’s underdog band, made up of a group of 5th graders, to take home the win at the Battle of the Bands. But as we’ve matured, it’s time to admit a hard truth: No Vacancy deserved their victory—and the audience was completely wrong for thinking otherwise.
No Vacancy, led by Theo (played by Adam Pascal), is a polished, professional rock band. Their performance of "Heal Me, I’m Heartsick" is tight, well-rehearsed, and undeniably impressive. They deliver a dynamic stage presence, soaring vocals, and a level of musicianship that reflects their experience.
Meanwhile, Dewey Finn (played by Jack Black) and his newly formed School of Rock band take the stage immediately after, performing their original song, "Teacher’s Pet." While their performance is full of passion, energy, and heart, it’s also clear that they’re a bunch of 10-year-olds playing their first gig. Sure, the crowd eats it up, but in a real competition, No Vacancy objectively put on the better show.
So while School of Rock may have made us believe in the power of rock and roll rebellion, adulthood makes one thing clear—No Vacancy was robbed.
