Boost Sonic games have had a noticeable dependency on 2D gameplay to compensate for the resources such high speed gameplay would require for 3D stages. Shadow Generations broke the trend by including fully 3D boost stages - something even the original generations did not do - alongside some of the best 2D levels ever seen! The question is, was this better than the hybrid approaches of the past?
