1,857The film fills in the holes from the book. In the book, the entire story is seen from the perspective of Bilbo. The first part of the Battle of the Five Armies was actually witnessed by him in one of the chapters, and the second part of it happens off-screen since Bilbo is unconscious. It is described to him in the next chapter, but in the film, the entire battle takes up half of the running time since it follows so many different perspectives on its own.
