Leonardo Dicaprio was offered the role of Rick O’Connell first, but he had to turn it down due to his previous engagement with filming for The Beach. He loved the script so much that he asked producers to delay shooting for The Beach, but they refused. In the end, he had to give up the opportunity to star in The Mummy, and The Beach was delayed anyways. Also, Clive Barker and George A. Romero were originally attached to the film, but their versions were deemed too dark and scary. Romero wanted to make it more like a classic zombie film, and Barker’s version was extremely dark. It would’ve focused on the head of a museum who was also the head of a cult that focused on reanimating mummies.
