There are a couple instances that hint to the whole movie being a virtual experience. When he takes the plaster off of his right arm, he realizes that the peace symbol tattoo from the injection point from Rekall is actually missing. He also gets told that he is the best spy in the world which hints to him being referred to like a hero in a fantasy. This all hints that he is in a virtual experience. Ethan Hawke was actually put in the director’s cut of the film as the real Hauser.
