Did you know Scrabble was invented by an unemployed architect?
Alfred Butts, a struggling architect during the Great Depression, created Scrabble in 1938 as a way to pass the time and make some extra money. Originally called "Lexico," the game was not an instant success and Butts had to personally make and sell sets out of his home. It wasn't until 1952 when a board game entrepreneur named James Brunot bought the rights and rebranded the game as "Scrabble" that it really took off.
The game is played on a 15x15 grid, with players taking turns forming words with letter tiles and trying to score as many points as possible. The point value of each letter is based on its frequency in the English language, with less common letters being worth more points.
Scrabble has been translated into over 30 languages and is sold in over 120 countries. It is estimated that over 150 million Scrabble sets have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular board games in history.
