The half-genie Shantae and her friends are invited to Paradise Island for the Half-Genie Festival, where she meets and befriends a group of fellow half-genies. However, during a performance at the festival, the other half-genies are kidnapped. Determined to uncover the reason for their disappearance, Shantae begins exploring the Sunken City beneath the island in search of the other half-genies. Along the way, she encounters her longtime nemesis Risky Boots, who seeks a mysterious treasure said to reside beneath the island, and battles the half-genies' captors and rulers of the island, the Seven Sirens.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a platform game developed by WayForward. It is the fifth game in the Shantae series, following Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. The game was released for iOS in September 2019, macOS in October 2019, with Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions released on May 28, 2020.
As a return to the style of the first three entries in the series, the game follows the half-genie Shantae as she explores an interconnected world. During her journey, Shantae encounters towns with non-player characters to interact with, as well as dungeon-style labyrinths containing new abilities to unlock and bosses to defeat. Shantae retains her ability to transform into other creatures, now utilized via an ability called "fusion magic" that allows her to instantly transform and use a creature's ability without having to select it like in past games. Additional special abilities can be performed by dancing. A new collectible card system allows players to obtain monster cards and use them to augment Shantae's abilities. Like other games in the series, completing the story awards the player with bonus artwork based on their final time and completion percentage. A New Game Plus mode allows the player to replay the game with higher magic but lower defense.
