Digital Privacy ▶ Is QubesOS the Solution?
#linux #security #privacy
I check out the Linux distribution QubesOS, which is touted as being the perfect OS for those who are privacy/security conscious. Let's take a look...
In the day and age we live in, tech companies and the eyes of the State don’t truly have our interests at heart. Silicon Valley offers us convenience, without informing us that convenience is inversely proportional with privacy and security. They may formally and legally anonymise our data but with the advancements in fingerprinting, there’s a digital profile out there about us all merely based on the specifications of our devices, usage data and so on.
QubesOS offers us a way to be more vigilant and secure but honestly, I love the fact that the developers themselves state that Qubes is “reasonably” secure. This is because there is no system that can miraculously and immediately wrench us out from the digital ecosystems we’ve entrenched ourselves in. Ultimately, things like Qubes are tools to assist us in fundamentally changing our digital habits. As mentioned earlier, convenience and privacy are inversely proportionate and best practice going forward is to spend a bit more time and effort working towards individual privacy.
Think about it like this: going on some whacky fad diet will not alone help us in achieving greater physical health. They may help us to construct better discipline and control over our habits, but they won’t mitigate the necessity for harder work such as exercise and being more careful about the things we consume.
Similarly, QubesOS is a fantastic tool to assist us on the path to greater online freedom, but it’s not going to do all the work. We need to consider: do we really need to click on that link, watch that video, download that vector logo or give up our location to an app that really shouldn’t it? We need to amend the way in which we consume digital content in the first place, but if you really need to go on that site that demands you enable java script to view it… well, there’s a qube for that.
