DiRT Rally Elite Finland Kakaristo 2010 Polo - First run
I just picked up the 2010 Polo car, so I'm starting the Elite Championship with no upgrades on the car. This is how the first race went with almost no experience with the Polo (I tried a custom event with it in Germany to try it out a few times).
Up until this time I was mostly advancing using the 60s cars. I had driven the 70s and 80s a bit, but the 60s Alpine ended up getting me through the Pro Championship.
I earned enough money for a 2010 car, so I went straight to the Polo. I haven't purchased any of the cars between the 80s and 2010s. Driving the Polo is like flying a spaceship. It corners and accelerates and brakes like a beast, but when you screw up, you go into orbit.
In the next video, I try this run again and do a bit better, but still place near last.
I ended up placing 10th in the event after the 10 stages (oof), and my car required 35k in repairs in the end, but I still took away 125k in money. Not bad. My typical good driving times are putting me around 5th place in the Elite tier. Advancing to Masters might be a chore - perhaps it will be easier after upgrades, or maybe just driving the 60s Alpine again. Frankly I think getting to Elite was a bit of a fluke. I was right on the edge of not making it, placing around 4th or 5th in the last event being in 3rd place in the championship, but the guy in 2nd place in the championship ruined his car and placed 16th in the final event, bumping me up into the 2nd place slot for the championship. It's like I didn't even need to try that hard, and the fact that I can just Recover Vehicle or Restart after a bad run seems like a drastic advantage, when not giving myself access to either would make the game entirely not fun to have a good run ended by one bad turn. Hopefully Elite doesn't hand me the advance. I want to earn my way. If this run here is any indicator, I need to stop being so timid on the turns and drive with the throttle pressed with an awareness of all the bumps that would throw me off the main line.
It's really freaky driving so fast through the forest with only your co-pilot to tell you what's coming up.
