🦴 PALEONTOLOGICAL REMAINS DISCOVERED ON THE ATLANTIC COAST OF BUENOS AIRES

🦔 During the month of April, staff from the "Punta Hermengo" Natural Sciences Museum in Miramar and students from the Advanced Paleontology Program recovered the fossil remains of the tail of a Glyptodont extinct some 3 million years ago.
Glyptodonts are a group of large placental mammals that lived throughout South America and are close relatives of modern-day armadillos. They roamed the earth from the Paleogene until their extinction no more than 10,000 years ago.

📍The discovery was made on the cliffs surrounding the beaches of Miramar, on the Atlantic coast of the province of Buenos Aires. These rocks belong to the Chapadmalal Formation, which dates back approximately 3 million years. This age is determined by the dating of impactites, locally known as scoria, which are direct evidence of an incredible medium-scale meteorite impact between the coasts of Mar del Plata and Miramar.

👷🏻 To extract the fossil, we had to identify how it was oriented in the sediment and dig a small pit around it with the help of picks and a hammer drill. This allowed us to assemble a bochón, a block containing the fossil remains and part of the surrounding stratum for transport and protection. The bochón was assembled with plaster and burlap, and we had to transport it on a ladder because it weighed more than 110 kilos.
Please note that fossil recovery efforts on coastal cliffs are severely limited by tides and weather conditions that affect the state of the sea.

👮🏻‍♂️ It's worth mentioning that all fossils in the Argentine Republic are regulated by the Law for the Protection of Archaeological and Paleontological Heritage, National Law 25,743. In the event of a discovery, please contact the local museum or the nearest police authority.

🏛️ The fossils found by the team were taken to the Punta Hermengo Museum laboratory for preparation and subsequent scientific research.
