🦖 URBAN FOSSILS
🦑 To see the fossil remains of extinct animals, we usually go to museums, but what if I told you there are fossils in public spaces?
On the floors or walls of houses, buildings, or shopping centers, we can find rocks (flags) of marine sediment. The ones we see in this video come from strata of the Vaca Muerta Formation (Upper Jurassic, 149 to 145 million years ago) from a fossil-bearing locality known as Los Catutos in central Neuquén, Argentina.
Ammonoids, known worldwide as ammonites, are an extinct group of cephalopod mollusks (relatives of modern-day octopuses and squids) that lived from the mid-Devonian (400 million years ago) to the end of the Mesozoic Era in the Late Cretaceous (66 million years ago). While dinosaurs walked on land, ammonites ruled the oceans.
It's worth noting that paleovertebrates such as fish, marine reptiles, and even flying ones can be found in these types of slabs!
