Disney's Pocahontas - Game Boy (1996)
9I was surprised to find out that the Game Boy and Genesis were the only systems to get this game. Not the SNES, not the Game Gear, and oddly enough this is one of those great looking Disney games that didn't get some kind of GBC release. This would have been an easy sell for the GBC or even the GBA; compile all of the Disney GB games onto one or two collection carts and take advantage of color. It was even able to use the SGB, so someone had it on their mind. It would have been no effort at all, which sort of leaves me to believe that these were not good selling games despite the quality that comes through.
Quality vs. fun always seems to be a tough balance for Disney to hit. On paper, a very well animated Disney Prince of Persia style game should be gold, but it's slow, boring, and obtuse. Especially for kids. I have a tough time finding the exact pixels it wants me to perform actions on. I have a tough time guessing what the game wants me to do. When I do figure out what to do, it doesn't always work the first three times I try it. It also demands a lot of restarts when you either back yourself into an unwinnable corner OR it's just too much of a slog to reverse all the damage you've done to yourself.
Now give that to a child. The entire demographic of the game. Yeah...not a good look.
