Disturbing Video Game Music 11: Hyuponia ~ Ruins of Sadness - Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
You know how Kirby is a cutesy series with surprisingly dark villains and worlds? Klonoa is the same, only sometimes even WORSE.
Each of the worlds in Klonoa 2 is based off of a different emotion; examples: Volk, the Kingdom of Discord, a city that is in perpetual war and Joliant, the Kingdom of Joy, which is more of a giant carnival than a proper nation. The last kingdom you go to is based off perhaps of the most infamous emotion of all: sorrow. Hyuponia, the Kingdom of Sorrow, is one gigantic desert filled with surreal architecture and hellish coloration. The song is easily one of the bleakest songs I have ever heard in a video game, and the fact that the level it plays for is so long and hard means you're guaranteed to hear every second of it multiple times. Everything about this song is twisted from the muffled voices to the distorted instruments to the neverending whoosh of the wind and the rumble of the world's unstable structure.
Players of Klonoa 1 will recognize the theme of Klonoa's grandfather in some sections, and for those who don't know: Klonoa's grandfather was brutally murdered in one of the first game's most tragic scenes. This makes the song all that more upsetting.
