Disturbing Video Game Music 126: Killorn Keep - Ultima Underworld 2
You know what? College is eating up a ton of my time and I don't have time to make more intricate videos, I think its a good time for another batch of DVGM!
We start with a very "your mileage will vary" one from one of the most venerable RPG franchises of all-time. Alongside Wizardy and Dragon Quest, Ultima is one of the forefathers to all video game RPGs. Just as important was its two spin-offs, Ultima Underworld and its sequel. If it weren't for these two games, we wouldn't have games like Elder Scrolls.
In the second Ultima Underworld game, the Avatar (the player) and his/her companions are trapped inside of Castle Britannia by a horrible unbreakable magic barrier made by the series' main villain: the Guardian. Adventuring into the caves beneath the castle, the Avatar finds a black gem that is connected to other dimensions, in order to save both the castle's residents and the rest of Britannia the Avatar will need to go to these other dimensions and find the black gems in them to finally shatter the barrier. Bad news is: each world is under the Guardian's iron fisted control.
The second realm the player gets to is Killorn Keep, a flying castle above a dark wasteland. This is perhaps the most dystopian world in the game: the entirety of this world's inhabitants are stuck on this flying castle and are totally under the Guardian's control, almost everyone is a cynical hollow shell after their subjugation and psychic monitoring, and the one of the only people who hasn't lost hope is the world's hero who must keep himself constantly drunk in order to avoid having his mind taken over by the Guardian.
As I said your mileage will vary on this one, but for me this song is just exceedingly unnerving, for the same reasons Ostown and the London Danger theme: context and general tone. The tragedy of what has happened in Killorn Keep is a dark reminder on what will happen to Brittania should you fail and the music signifies nothing less than total decay and loss of hope.
