Reference:
A bow is a throwing weapon designed for shooting arrows. To fire, the shooter pulls the bowstring, thereby accumulating energy in the curved arc of the bow, then releases the bowstring, and the arc, quickly unbending, converts the accumulated potential energy into kinetic energy of a rapidly flying arrow.
The radius of the arrow depends on the bow design, string tension and weather; up to an average of 250 meters [unauthorized source?] for a non-combat arrow.
Over time, the bow evolved into a crossbow (around the 4th century BC), which no longer required special skills and strength for shooting. In the late Middle Ages, it was gradually replaced by firearms, although for a long time a bow and crossbow were used along with it.
Bows are divided into simple and compound, but they all represent an arc with a bowstring for throwing arrows. Simple ones were made from solid wood of the most suitable tree species up to 1.5 m long (the maximum known length is 2.2 m). Composite (or composite) bows were shorter, made from different materials: horns (inside), wood (in the middle), and glued animal tendons (outside). As a result, the required flexibility, resilience and strength is achieved by reducing the length of the bow itself.
There is a division of bows into "long" (English Longbow) and "flat" (flat bow):
long bows - rounded in cross section, with narrower shoulders;
flat bows - flat in cross section, with wider shoulders.
The bowstring was made from animal veins, intestines, rawhide or plant fibers.
