DIY RUSTIC WOOD SLICE COASTERS
This is sort of a visual timelapse "how to" video on how to make these decorative wood slice coasters. There's a lot i didn't include in the video just because i didn't have my camera setup at the time, but heres a brief description step by step of how i made these.
1. Find a nice 3" to 4" log or tree branch.
2. Cut 1/2" to 1" discs off of the branch at a slight angle to avoid cracking when drying.
3. Dry the discs for a few days. There are several websites that have different techniques on how to do this.
4. Sand 1 side smooth. I used 80 grit sandpaper because i thought it would add to the rustic look. Also for a little help i hot glued the discs to my work bench so they wouldn't move on me. I could have just as easily, but more dangerously held the sander upside-down and rubbed the discs on it.
5. Now draw your design on, outline, and color. I used sharpie and Prisma color pencils for this.
6. Finally, finish them with some kind of wood finishing oil/stain/clearcoat that is food safe. But if you painted with something that washes off easily i suggest using a few light layers of acrylic clearcoat, and a lacquer on top of that.
