I wanted to make a joule thief with a big ferrite core to operate a dead CFL using 3 AA batteries but, I couldn't find one. So, I decided to make one from steel laminations.
Normally, the iron toroidal cores are made from very long sheets which are wrapped to form them (in the same way the tape from a compact cassette is wrapped around the spool). In my case, I could use a very long sheet so I cut steel swaures and turned them into toroidal plates. At the end I combined them to form the core.
The whole procedure took me several days (I would go to a factory to make them for me, but the coronavirus outbreak resulted in the factory closure).
