131This is an arrangement of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band-Aid, released in 1984. I have arranged it for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES console.
You know, it's funny. I've known the song since I was a little kid, but I never really took the time to listen to the lyrics until I sat down and typed them out for the captions. Just imagine the backlash that would be sprung on anyone who attempted these lyrics in 2020! O_o Things have certainly changed.
I wanted to do something fun for everyone for Christmas, so I thought that this might be a cool song to cover. To make things a bit more interesting, I limited myself to only using electronically generated sounds. No orchestra hits, no trumpets, no snappy toms.
(Well, okay. There is one exception. It'll be pretty obvious near the end....)
All of the sounds in the song are samples I recorded of PSG and FM waveforms sampled directly from the NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16 systems. I wanted to see what happened if I mashed so many distinct sounds into a single mix, and the SPC700 seemed happy to play host.
It was especially cool to have so much memory free after using those tiny instruments samples since I had room to include the digitized vocal at such high quality, relatively speaking. At 11Khz, that sample consumes about half of the SPC700's memory block on its own.
Given the sacrilege that this would've constituted back in the fabled console war days, I suppose I could force some ham-fisted metaphor here about the value of togetherness and working to overcoming differences, but I'm going to avoid that bit of low-hanging fruit at the moment.
