The choice between docker run and docker-compose depends on your specific use case and requirements. Both tools have their advantages and are suited for different scenarios:
Use docker run when:
Running Individual Containers: If you only need to run a single Docker container or a few isolated containers, docker run is a straightforward and efficient choice.
Customization: docker run allows for granular customization of container configurations such as port mappings, volume mounts, environment variables, container names, and runtime options.
Ad-hoc Tasks: For one-off tasks, testing, debugging, or situations where you need fine-grained control over container configuration, docker run provides flexibility.
Use docker-compose when:
Docker Compose is a tool you can use to define and share multi-container applications. This means you can run a project with multiple containers using a single source. For example, assume you're building a project with NodeJS and MongoDB together
Docker Compose is a great way to define a multi-container development environment. Rather than adding things like databases or redis to your Dockerfile, you can reference existing images for these services and focus your Dev Container's content on tools and utilities you need for development
