Does Jumping Flash Hold Up 30 Years Later?
It’s 1995 and the original PlayStation has just launched. The hottest new first party Sony game on store shelves is a mind blowing platformer called Jumping Flash. Developed by three different Japanese studios, Exact who worked on the game engine and mechanics, Ultra who created the characters and designed the cutscenes; and Sony’s in-house Japan Studio who assisted in the games development. PlayStation had a lot riding on Jumping Flash, as this was their chance to have a mascot for the new console, that in their eyes could rival the two biggest powerhouses of the day; Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog and Nintendo’s Mario. For Jumping Flash, the star of the show was Robbit. A mechanical Rabbit, that flies through space, shooting and hopping on bad guys and munching down carrots.
For this video, I played Jumping Flash via the emulated version released for the PS5; whilst I had to crack out the original PlayStation to play the second Jumping Flash. Hopefully Sony will bring the sequel to the PS5 soon. The third Jumping Flash, I couldn’t play for this video as it was only released in Japan and would require me to import a ridiculously expensive copy AND also import a Japanese PS1 to play it because of region locks. And with my budget not being big enough to support this, I had to leave the third game, but I do still give it a mention if you want to check it out later.
Hope you enjoy this video, and I’ll see you in the next episode where I cover the Twisted Metal series!
