The legendary country singer is one of the great icons of the state and is an American treasure. As such, one can imagine how proud her fellow Tennesseans are of her. So it must have come to a shock when news broke out that Dolly Parton is rejecting the proposed statue of herself.
In recent years, many Southern states including Tennessee have had statues removed or torn down of prominent figures from the Confederacy.
Nevertheless, the people of Tennessee want to see statues that represent their state and its unique culture and contribution to the nation.
An online petition was started in 2020 to replace all Confederate statues in Tennessee with statues of Dolly Parton! The petition stated that the Confederate figures worked to tear the country apart, while the singer has worked to bring Americans closer together.
This petition inspired a bill to install a statue of the singer at the Tennessee State Capitol building. Fans were probably surprised when Dolly Parton herself rejected the proposed statue and asked that it not be built.
This isn’t the first time that the singer has rejected an accolade. She’s twice rejected the Presidential Medal of Freedom and feels that now is not an appropriate time to receive recognition.
She feels that being put on a pedestal is not appropriate at this time. What’s the tension in the country that makes Dolly Parton so reticent to receive accolades?
No doubt there’s controversy on replacing the Confederate statues. No doubt there’s a feeling of unease throughout the country that’s tearing Americans apart.
