Having recently covered the Ocean release of Donkey Kong in a separate video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHVLIyNQ-t8), I thought I'd do a comparison with the version developed by Atarisoft.

The Atarisoft version contains all of the game's levels, but does omit some minor features. Donkey Kong doesn't beat his chest in this version and the "How high can you get?" screen doesn't appear at all; the Ocean version includes both of these and also includes DK's dazed, eye-spinning animation when he lands on his head. Technically, the Ocean version is the more feature-complete version.

I found this version the more difficult to beat. The enemy pathing AI is more aggressive and the control scheme is slightly more fiddly; grabbing hold of ladders isn't as easy as the Ocean version, particularly when trying to go down ladders to lower platforms.

The graphics in this version seem slightly stretched when compared to the Ocean release. Despite both games featuring the same 320 x 200 resolution, the Atarisoft version appears slightly stretched leading to their recognisable "blocky" graphics style. The graphics are still easily recognisable as Donkey Kong and still convey as good an "arcade-at-home" experience as the C64 was capable of.

Overall, I'm impressed with Atarisoft's efforts and it's still a fun game to play. I think that, overall, the Ocean version has a slight edge due to being the more complete version, but the Atarisoft version certainly doesn't play any worse for the content that's missing.
