This time I decided to take a look at Donkey Kong from 1981. While I would not say that Donkey Kong is a terrible game I do think that it has a lot of flaws. I found the game to be fun overall but in my analysis I found it to be lacking in a lot of ways as well.
Initially, I was very hard on the game because it controls very sluggishly and can sometimes be more frustrating than fun. Then I reminded myself that not only is it an old arcade game from 1981, it is one of the earliest examples of the platformer. This is more or less the birth of the platformer and like the birth of other things it is far from perfect. I think that the game is overall decent but I am not sure that I would recommend it beyond curiosity and historical reasons.
Next time I will take a look at an arcade game that I feel has a similar level of historical backing AND is still fun to play today. Until then, have you played Donkey Kong? Did you think that it was fun? I am curious what the consensus is as I feel like maybe I was more harsh on it than some may be.
