Adventure games were once a vast and mainstream genre, but since then have become niche relic from the past. Once dominant series like Kings Quest from Sierra On-Line or Gabriel Knight from the same studios became completely missing as time went on. Grim Fandango came at the tail end of the reign of the adventure game but is it the last hurrah or does it have something to do with the death of the genre?
This is the first of a series of videos where I am looking at the Top 100 video games of all time. You can find the list for the Top 100 Video Games List above. I do think that Grim Fandango holds up surprisingly well especially when compared to some of its contemporaries from the day. The game is not perfect by any means but it is a fantastic representation of a genre that more or less died over the next few years. Yes there has been a renaissance of sorts with companies like TellTale, but considering their profitability was slim to none I am not sure we will ever see a true return to mainstream adventure games.
Regardless, I enjoyed my time with the game and found it somewhat refreshing compared to the types of games that I usually play. I would never put it in the Top Ten games of all time but for the time being I do believe that it belongs on a list of the Top Games of All Time. Have you ever played Grim Fandango?
