I quite liked the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and I think he's a rather thorough worldbuilder, but even he has limits to what he explains. As I recall, from when I read this series years ago, he just says it's magic. And yet that annoys some people who want to apply modern science to how the magic works.
I say there are limits to how nitty gritty you should expect magic to get.
