DOOM 2 - REOLWOLF.WAD (2fiffy1.zip)

"originally I wanted to simply write "for obvious reasons" in here, but because of all the rage and frustration George has put me through with these maps, I'm going to write an honest review. The first couple of maps are pretty decent in terms of George Fiffy's quality, but the rest is downright unplayable without continuous play.
The first truly bad map is possibly MAP04. You are supposed to dispatch two archviles with only a shotgun and a chaingun. Yes, you've read that right - the SHOTGUN, no SSG in here. Oh, did I mention that there is almost no cover in this room whatsoever? I guess you could quickly go for the plasma rifle (for which you have to press an unmarked patch of a random wall the size of a thumb), but the archies will smite you either way. Ah, and then you've got the big rectangular room with a giant Nazi flag on the floor and a gazillion of pinkies and spectres. How classy.
MAP05 is no better. It's almost as if George designed the lift near the red key door to annoy the player to their maximum capacity. Oh, and don't get me started on the mancubus/revenant room. Yuck.
Now this next map is when I decided I just had to use rewind and TAS, since I was done with the author's bullshit. Ironically, MAP06 is also probably my favorite from the whole levelpack, but it's probably just my brain being turned into a mush after the last map I recorded (which I'll get into later). It's so inacessible to the normal player (aka without cheats or TAS), yet it's so damn clever I just couldn't dislike it.
I'll skip over the details of almost all other maps - MAP07 is an unbearable slog, MAP08 is just okay, MAP09 - for some bizzare reason - is a quite unconventional and unorthodox Icon Of Sin, and MAP32 is a small but pleasant slaughtery level. But there is one final map which I'd like (or rather not) to talk about, and that is...
...the monstrosity which is MAP31. Yes, I get it George, it's shaped so it spells "REoL," wow you're so clever, aren't ya? In reality, playing this... does this even qualify as a map? Well anyways, playing this map is as pleasant and relaxing as having a lobotomy or a brain hemorrhage. Not only do you get surrounded by a wall of mancubi fireballs every single time you get into their line of sight, you'll also only get the shotgun and the chaingun at the start of the map. Yeah, and you're tasked to kill two archies simultaneously with two revenants with ALMOST NO COVER, all while avoiding the projectiles of the mancubi and whatnot (and possibly killing the monsters which the archies resurrect). Ooh, but it gets even worse (yes, it unfortunately can get worse). After some arachnotrons and one more archie you'll have to chop through amounts of former humans comparable to small army units, a wall of what I think is about a hundred pinkies and spectres, rooms with tons and tons of random enemies and arch-viles bringing back the demons you've just killed and surrounding themselves with them, and most importantly the 5 MINUTE WAIT FOR THE BRIDGE TO THE BLUE KEY DOOR TO RAISE. And the secret exit with around 40 mancubi to kill with nothing but the SSG and chaingun (and two invulnerability spheres) is just a cherry on top. Bon apetit.
About the whole WAD, most of these maps don't even qualify as Wolfenstein inspired or themed, and as always George makes it so that you'll definitely never find his secrets unless you look into a map editor to see which lines open what door or lower which platform. What's even the point of a secret if you have to look up the way to access it?
I'm so done, Fiffy. Just go play Brutal Wolfenstein for a much better experience."
player comments: "TAS was used, since I never would've finished this WAD otherwise."

description: "This game is a mini episode containing (9) levels of the unexplored
Wolfenstein castle, 2 extras are SECRET!* These levels use regular DOOM II
graphics, and, of course, the Wolfenstein set that came with DOOM II!
ALSO, since the DOOM II enemies are tougher, there is no need for 1,000
enemies in a single level, unlike TOTAL WARs for DOOM! GOOD LUCK!
This game can be played in all modes. In 1 or multi-player games, you'll
go at the unexplored sections of Castle Wolfenstein against some of the
HARDEST enemies you'll ever face! No need for 100 enemies here. Just ONE
could do you in on a level (of course, there are more)!
In Deathmatch, you and up to four Doomheads will duke it out (or blow
each other to kingdom come) to be the only survivor. Are you that person?"
