I'm still alive! I decided to record a 1994 wad called Aarrghh! and if you try playing it blind, you'll understand why it's called that. Who am I kidding, you'll get frustrated even if you know what you're doing. This was supposed to be an episode replacement, but only 4 maps have been finished, with the rest of the maps being identical starting rooms.
E1M1 - A quite irritating level because of its obtuse progression (I despite having to guess which side of the teleporter you have to walk on) and the cyberdemon that has to be shotgunned. What's unusual about this map is that it contains a secret exit despite being E1M1. The normal exit is in that cruciform room. Once the platform in the center lowers, walk over it, then go back to the starting room and see a new area open. You get teleported on top of a pole, but do not drop down, or you're going to softlock yourself. Kill all lost souls that are visible to you in this room (that row of them you can see in an adjacent room is not necessary). If you do not kill them all, the floor in the pit will not rise. Then do a rocketjump across an inescapable pit to get to the secret exit. Remember, this is 1994!
E1M9 - A huge, long map. The first room with 20% damaging floor sucks ass. Ammo is not plentiful enough to be cavalier with it, so try to conserve it a bit. Progression is as obtuse as ever, with many switches that do "something." Some of the traps are deadly if you are playing blind. I had to cheat here a bit to remember where all the secrets are and because I got dabbed on first by the crusher trap (I got too greedy and tried to grab everything in one go). The cyberdemon courtyard with the BFG is irritating because its actually difficult to grab said BFG without catching a rocket.
E1M2 - From pistol start, this map requires a lot of ammo conservation, so prepare to punch out a bunch of pinkies and spectres with no berserk and backtrack to grab the shotguns that you left lying around. There's no chaingun on this map either. Yet again, I had to cheat in the the double mastermind fight because I completely forgot about it and did something stupid. I have to say that the barrel secret is quite clever. Make sure you have enough health and armor when you enter it. Shoot the right barrel first and survive the blast of the barrel that gets revealed, then hide in that alcove so you don't get gibbed by the other barrel. I've seen something similar in a WADPAK or Heroes map, but still - this is pretty cool, even though this is dumb trial-and-error.
E1M8 - Just a straightforward, short arena level. Try to kill the barons via infighting, or you are likely to run out of ammo when killing the cyberdemon that is revealed once the barons are dead.
