At Doom's Gate played with Native Instruments Bandstand. Bandstand was a standalone application + VST that played MIDI files. It had a massive 2.5 GB General MIDI sample set. Bandstand was discontinued by NI and is no longer available.
Despite the size of the sample set, it actually sounds quite poor. The instruments are weak, the drums are weak, the overall sound is bland. The application has additional effects like reverb and chorus presets, and a render to wave feature. But there are problems such as dropping notes, and inability to properly switch instruments in MIDI channels with patch changes. However, the VST version is okay for usage in composing music with host programs (like FL Studio).
