Hell on Earth
Doom Eternal is a first-person shooter game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. The sequel to Doom (2016), and the fifth main game in the Doom series, it was released on March 20, 2020, for Windows, PlayStation 4, Stadia and Xbox One, with a version for Nintendo Switch being released on December 8, 2020 and versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S being planned. Set some time after the events of the 2016 game, the story follows the Doom Slayer once again, on a mission to end Hell's consumption of Earth and foil the alien Maykrs' plans to exterminate humanity.
The Demons of Hell first gave him the appellation "Doom Slayer" and also refer to him as the Unchained Predator, the Beast, and the Hell Walker. The UAC refers to the Doom Slayer as DOOM Marine, or The Slayer.
Before the character had any epithets in the story, he was most commonly called Doomguy in the fan community. This nickname is mentioned in Doom Eternal and used in his dialogue subtitles.
He is intended to be the latest iteration and continuation of the classic Doom Marine who is the protagonist for most of the series. According to Tom Hall and John Romero (who worked on the original Doom), the original iteration of the Doom Marine was the grandson of Commander Keen and the great-great-grandson of William J. Blazkowicz. Some sources infer the Doom Slayer's name to be William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz III. The Doom Slayer's Blazkowicz ancestry may not be canonical for the modern iteration.
The developers have also stated that the protagonist has no name and is a representation of the player. When asked directly on Twitter, John Romero replied that his name really is Doom Guy (with a space, in two words - first word for name and second for surname).
