Source Port: PsyDoom 1.1.0
Difficulty: Ultra-Violence

The PlayStation version of Doom is considered one of the, if not the best version alongside the original PC version. It combines Doom 1 and 2 into one long demon killing epic, treating both games as one episode each, and gives the classic Doom experience a fresh paintjob with colored lighting effects, and a brand new ambient horror soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges. While not a perfect port thanks to console limitations--A few maps are missing, many of Doom 1's maps use the inferior Jaguar layouts, the Archvile, Icon of Sin, and Wolfenstein enemies are gone--the high quality and unique additions to this version make it well worth playing. The team at Midway who made this port would go on to make the similar Doom 64.

Now as for the maps...

Hangar, while simplified, still feels pretty close to the original map, only missing the two pillars in the armor room. Playing on Ultra-Violence or higher reveals a nasty surprise: Chaingunners and a Pain Elemental. That's right, there's Doom 2 demons in Doom 1! This goes a long way to make up for the simplified level layouts. In this map they're placed pretty fairly, so even the Pain Elemental isn't an issue.
