This is a typical Kart-rating game released for the Gameboy.
You must win the race outright to progress, however the game does have a flaw in that if you end up having a lead you can in theory fly off on your own while all others lag behind. With the offset that if YOU're behind, and the person at first place is out of the screen (and with no item to lag them a bit), s/he (though usually Nobita) will fly off THEMselves, essentially giving you the guarentee that you will finish second before the first lap's even complete.
So being half a track ahead in this game is the only way to be sure you'll end up finishing first.

The video contains static in the sound, this is caused by Fraps and VisualBoyAdvance not wanting to cooperate. Nothing I can do about that.

If you play as Doraemon (or Doremi in the Extended mode), you will occasionally obtain an item without running over the item box, it's a rather cheap feature, but I guess it can be described as some sort of "easy mode" compared to playing as the other 4 characters.
