One of the pivotal reasons behind the rise of the IBM PC was the sheer amount of competition it faced in the microcomputer market. Machines with better graphics, sound, or even processing forced the X86 DOS machines to improve or be lost in the shuffle. It also allowed developers unique ways to express their visions that aren't found anymore, and gave porters a chance to learn the ropes before crafting their own titles.
