Well this is the unrepressable force that is a randomed Io in the hands of someone who vaguely knows how to use him. Io is a fairly tricky hero to use since his damage is average and his attack speed is poor and his only ability that causes damage is fairly tricky to reliably land. He also naturally has no stuns, making him a pretty terrible support. Right?

Wrong! Io is one of the strongest supports in the game, so long as he's paired with a very strong and aggressive hero. Take him with you to the midlane and get him to buy the bottle and suddenly your mid hero has his own personal bottle that can bottle-crow, collect runes and imbue bottle charges regardless of incoming damage at 1.5x the value of regenerated mana and hitpoints due to Tether. Tether (the Q ability) being the main factor in hideousness. You boost your ally by 17% movement speed, slow anything that crosses the tether line, fly towards the tether target if far away from them on initial casting (allowing for handy escapes too!) and then give them 1.5x whatever regen you currently have active.

Now here's where overcharge becomes really important. If you're at full health or mana and you're not regening anything then using a bottle or tether no longer provides the ally with regen. You need to actively be regening yourself to imbue the teammate. Overcharge, an ability that's awesome in it's own right boosting attack speed and reducing tethered ally damage taken (Io also gets both effects), also drains your own health and mana by 4.5% of it's current amount. This sounds bad, right? And yes, losing health and mana is bad... but it doesn't interrupt bottle charges or salves, meaning you can always, regardless of how much health and mana you have, activate overcharge, and heal your ally with your powers.

The increase in potency of tether and overcharge aren't huge, level 1 is enough to begin with. Get your ult whenever you can (upgrade at 6/11/16) and max spirits from level 3 onwards, followed by overcharge. Don't follow my skillbuild in this game.

Great items for Io:
Ring of Protection, you have no armour. Get one, you need it. It'll become tranquil boots later on.

Tranquil Boots, you probably don't need arcanes. You don't need mana that much and your ally will get enough mana from bottle and soul ring most likely. Not always though...

Bottle, your bread and butter and your allies favourite thing.

Soul Ring, you gain 150 mana for 10 seconds. If you use it, great, if not then you lose it. Your ally, however, gets 225 mana and DOESN'T lose it. You can use Soul Ring at max mana and it'll give you extra so it always works on your ally.

Mekanism, not only does it give Io more armour which he so badly needs, it's a 250HP heal in an AoE and your ally (if you recovered all that) gets an extra 325 as well... giving him 575HP! Madness!

Urn of Shadows, also a handy pickup for more healing.
