Double Dragon Gaiden playthrough
0This is a good game in its own right but it just doesn’t feel like a double dragon game to me. It’s more like Scott Pilgrim or the river city ransom remakes. Some people will see this as no bad thing, but I’ve never been a big fan of those games but I am a huge double dragon fan, so I am disappointed.
It’s hard to criticise this game because the devs really put a lot of love and attention in making this game and it shows. I just wished they didn’t call it double dragon because it subverted my expectations.
The graphics are great and the moves are good, expect the punches and kicks are very short. I like the special moves but depending on your difficulty, you can get limited use. I’m not really into the system of playing the game over and over to gain money to unlock bonuses from the shop. The higher the difficulty, the more money you will get at the end, but you will need that money to buy lives and continues more throughout the game so it’s probably best to stick with the easiest setting because you will blast through it quicker anyway.
There are some difficulty spikes which are more irritating than challenging. Like going up a lift and getting knocked off and getting hit by dynamite which takes a lot of health off, which you won’t really recover from. The boss on top of the skyscraper was really irritating too and took me way too long, even with the easy difficulty setting because I couldn’t hit him.
I would have preferred this game if it was called something else but I can’t help comparing it to double dragon 4, which was brilliant. Although I may be a bit biased because Double Dragon 2 is my favourite beat em up of all time.
