Double Dragon may not have been the first beat ‘em up game released but it arguably did bring the genre to new heights in popularity. I remember playing the arcade game at a Safeway, in the front where they stuff candy machines, formerly home of Redbox kiosks, etc. It was unique but it was incredibly hard. I was used to playing Spy Hunter, another hard but fun, arcade unit nearby or playing Super Mario Bros right next to the Double Dragon machine. There was always a line to play so I rarely got time in on it. Then my friend got it on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and I borrowed it one weekend. Not the life changer many feel it is, at least for me, but I can respect its place in gaming history. This fan port of Double Dragon is nothing like the other Lee brothers’ game that the Neo Geo got (that was a 1 on1 fighter).
