Deluxe Paint was one of the, if not the most, important graphics application for game developers in the late 80s and early 90s. Used by companies such as iD Software, Lucas Arts and Sega, it was the standard tool for pixel art creation. DPaint.js is a modernized pixel art application heavily inspired by Deluxe Paint. Oh, and its completely free and open source... which is nice.
