Dragon Ball Daima is definitely riddled with inconsistencies, plot holes, and continuity errors that make it a struggle to place it into its canonical slot preceding the events of Dragon Ball Super. And yet, Daima is the most Toriyama-feeling Dragon Ball adventure in decades, filled with charm, whimsy, and fun. So how important is it for a story to be canon, for it to abide by its own continuity? And can Daima still be considered good even though it wrecks its own continuity?

When Goku and friends shrink due to a conspiracy, they explore the unknown Demon Realm.
Dragon Ball Daima (Japanese: ドラゴンボールDAIMA, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru Daima), stylized as Dragon Ball DAIMA, is a Japanese anime television miniseries produced by Toei Animation. It is the sixth televised animated installment in the Dragon Ball media franchise, and the second and last to have been written by franchise creator Akira Toriyama, who died in March 2024. Featuring a storyline set after the events of Dragon Ball Z, the series aired on Fuji TV from October 2024 to February 2025.
Following the defeat of the evil Majin Buu and the former Demon King Dabura in Dragon Ball Z, Gomah (ゴマー, Gomā), the new Supreme King of the Demon Realm, uses the Dragon Balls to turn Son Goku and his friends into younger versions of themselves in order for them to not pose any threat to him. Goku, Shin, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma are aided by the demons Glorio (グロリオ, Gurorio) and Panzy (パンジ, Panji), both who oppose Gomah, in a journey through the three worlds of the Demon Realm to gather its native Dragon Balls and revert Gomah's wish.
Dragon Ball Daima was announced in October 2023, before Akira Toriyama's death. However, due to his death in March 2024, the series effectively became his swan song, as well as releasing on the series' 40th anniversary focused on returning to the series' roots. The accidental finality of the series was frequently mentioned in coverage of the series, with Toriyama's brand of juvenile comedy being frequently praised as a positively distinct feature of the anime. Easter eggs referencing Toriyama's earlier works were also frequently noted, with the character of Majin Duu greeting people in a similar manner to Arale-chan from Dr. Slump, and Neva singing the opening theme from the original Dragon Ball anime.
