Dragon Power (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Bandais's 1987 action game for the NES, Dragon Power.
Dragon Power was one of the first NES games that left me completely bewildered. As a kid I had never heard of Dragon Ball, and this strange "localization" didn't clarify much of anything. Why is Roshi obsessed with Nora's "sandwiches"? Why am I playing as a chimp in a prison jumpsuit? How did I end up on the moon?
But such is the charm that the ridiculous translation effort imbues the game with. From a gameplay standpoint, Dragon Power has never been particularly good - it feels like a slightly improved retooling of Deadly Towers mixed with a variety show that specializes in nonsequiturs. And it works. Somehow. The completely nonsensical presentation elevates Dragon Power well above many other games with equally mediocre gameplay.
So while it's censored, ugly, and the story is outright incoherent, against all odds, Dragon Power manages to be fun, and can always be counted on to draw a laugh or two. Games don't have to be good to entertain, right?
