Dragon Quest IV [DS] Playthrough #002, Prologue; Chapter 1: Troubles in Bonnie Burland
This is video #002 in my playthrough of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. This video does not contain commentary. For the commentary version, follow this link: http://youtu.be/Q_hAi0prjmo
As I start the game, I create a new male character named Heorot (the same name I used in the Erdrick Trilogy).
The DS version of the game starts off with a Prologue in the Hero's home village. As it starts out, Heorot is training in the training dungeon. His sword trainer beats him senseless. When Heorot can move again, he can break barrels and pots to collect a Medicinal Herb, a Seed of Strength, and three whole Gold coins. The poor kid starts out with some basic equipment, but that can be easily remedied before he actually sets out on his journey.
Note that if you insist on using the menu to talk to people and examine objects, you can do so with the X button. I personally find it easier to do the same things with the A button.
Out in the village (time index 2:24), we hear the game's epic town theme. Heorot meets ... a talking frog? Huh. It disappears down the stairway to the training dungeon. Before pursuing it, Heorot finds an Antidotal Herb in a pot.
It turns out the frog was really an elf named Eliza, Heorot's mischievous childhood friend who knows the Morph spell. Sounds pretty useful.
WIth that done, Heorot explores the village. This village seems pretty insular. No one visits, and no one wants them to. There are also snatches about Heorot's destiny or some such. Heorot can't even leave the village yet.
After talking with everyone, Heorot goes home (time index 8:30). There is a Medicinal Herb to find in a pot. When he talks to his papa, the family has dinner. What's this, an RPG hero with living parents? Papa has some interesting words before Mama shuts him up...
When the Prologue ends (time index 10:52), we start Chapter 1: Ragnar McRyan and the Case of the Missing Children. We're off to bonnie Burland as King Burnard summons his best knight, Ragnar, and his useless guards to investigate the disappearance of "bairns" (children) in nearby Strathbaile. Hope you can make sense of the Scottish dialect! Personally, I like it.
After the scene, the player controls Ragnar (time index 12:20). This character is a physical powerhouse, pure and simple. This chapter will be a piece of cake for him. Exploring Burland Castle, he can find out some information from his fellow Scots. One elderly gentleman says something ominous about a Lord of Darkness. A book in the same room says something about a special shield bestowed upon Burland's first king from on high. In the southeast of the main floor, a chest of drawers contains a Medicinal Herb. Ragnar may need these because he'll never learn a lick of magic.
Outside the castle, Ragnar will find himself in "bonnie Burland Toon" (time index 17:13). The Item Shop sells some pretty basic items. Next to the Item Shop, he can find 3 Gold in a barrel. Endless riches!
A lady near the Armour Shop tells Ragnar how to get to Strathbaile. The Armour Shop has plenty of good equipment on sale. The immediate item of interest is a Hardwood Headwear, which costs just a tad more than Ragnar has on hand. It's a waste of money to buy a Leather Shield, because upstairs in the Armour Shop, Ragnar can find a Leather Shield in a wardrobe.
In the house south of the Armour Shop, Ragnar can get 5 Gold from a pot. Along the south side of the Inn, he can find Medicinal Herb in a barrel.
West of the Inn, Ragnar can talk to Aigneas, a woman whose husband, Angus, has gone off to investigate a "tur" (tower) on an island in the loch near Strathbaile. Uh oh, another missing person to find. In Aigneas's house, there is a chest with a Seed of Strength. i would just pop this in the bag.
The Weapon Shop has some reasonable equipment for sale, but in this chapter, there's really no need to buy any weapons at all. We will see why soon.
This game starts the Dragon Quest tradition of saving the game by confessing to a church priest rather than by talking to a king.
Thanks for watching!
