Dragon Quest IX Commentary #195, Quests 134 & 136: When Tax Attacks & EXTERMINATE!
This is video #195 in my playthrough of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. This video contains commentary. To view the non-commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/voP0IrLQjXE
The party is coming off a grotto exploration binge, and now it is time to get a few more quests done. To this end, they fly to the top of the plateau in Hermany south of Swinedimples (time 1:07).
Inside the house on the plateau, they talk with Herman (time 1:17). He's fed up with bureaucratic nonsense, but he can't seem to get away from it. He issues Quest 134: When Tax Attacks. He wants them to find the tax collector for him and pay his bill. It must be nighttime.
After making night fall, the party seeks the tax collector on Herman's plateau. The target monster is a Hunter Mech (time 4:41).
When the Hunter Mech is clobbered, it will get up for a scene (time 5:06). However, it seems Herman has not gone through all the necessary bureaucratic nonsense. Absurd.
Afterwards, the party reports the situation to Herman (time 6:23). He rewards the party with a Wizard's Hat. But only Mages can equip this. Gee, thanks.
From the pot in his room, they acquire Mini Medal #076 (time 7:32). Yay!
Now, on the bookshelf just above Herman, there is a letter (time 7:57). The caps-filled telegram issues Quest 136: "EXTERMINATE!" It asks the recipient to kill at least three Metal Slimes in one battle three times on the high plateau near Angel Falls. Really not excessively difficult. Be sure to have several people who know Thunder Thrust or Hatchet Man. A Falcon Sword-wielder with Metal Slash is also helpful.
After accepting the quest, the party flies over to Slime Hill, the plateau near Angel Falls, for their hunting (time 10:13). Slimes of all types appear here, but only normal Metal Slimes count toward this quest. Liquid Metals do not count. Use the ability Vanish from the Ranger's Ruggedness skill to sneak up on the Metal Slimes. If you sneak up on them from behind, there is a heightened chance to surprise them. Too bad it's not almost guaranteed, like in Ni no Kuni. You can go into the cave to reset the enemies on the field.
After the party eliminates a trio of Liquid Metal Slimes, Angelo reaches Priest Level 67 (time 12:15). Debora reaches Gladiator Level 58.
Soon, the party finds and kills their first group of Metal Slimes (time 13:58).
When the battle is over, Heorot reaches Paladin Level 66 and earns 2 skill points (time 15:02).
A few minutes later, the party finds and kills their second group of Metal Slimes (time 18:48).
Directly afterwards, they polish off the third and final group (time 20:55). The party even gets a Slime Crown from a King Slime.
Next, a Hunter Mech arrives to let the party know they have successfully carried out the task (time 22:24). Hm, this explains the terse and technical tone of the letter.
Then, they return to Herman's plateau in Hermany (time 23:40). They examine the same bookshelf (time 23:56). The Metal Hunters have left behind a token of their appreciation: a Metal Slime Shield! Now that's what I call a reward. Quest complete!
In the next episode, the party will continue the Back to Brigadoom quest line.
