Previously, Davilas the human finished up the Minstrel vocation quests and unlocked his coup de grâce. He also did the quest to unlock Redo Gems, which reset the skill points spent in a particular vocation.

Speaking of vocations, it is now a convenient time to unlock some, since Davilas now has train access to all races' capital cities. The vocation unlock quest givers are in capital cities, by and large. Today, he will unlock Paladin and Ranger.

First, Davilas will unlock Paladin. After hiring his support characters, he changes vocations to Level 22 Warrior (time 3:09). He goes to get himself outfitted at the equipment shops in Glen (time 5:16). He needs to have at least 8 points into the Warrior's Courage skill to learn Whipping Boy (かばう), which allows him to protect an ally he's close to. Unfortunately, Whipping Boy can only be used while he is a Warrior.

After preparing, Davilas zooms over to Gaatoranto (time 7:03). He heads right into Gaatoranto Castle (time 8:04).

In the room at H-4 on the first floor, he chats with Sutorongu, or Strong (time 8:57). Sanbitaria gives him Mini Medal #143. Counting the 43 he has already spent, he is currently at 100 medals.

Strong assigns Davilas Quest 098, the Paladin unlock quest. Davilas first has to go out to the Gaatoranto countryside as a Warrior. In ten separate battles, he must use Whipping Boy (かばう) and block an attack for an ally. Then, he must go pray to a grave in southwestern Zama Pass.

So, Davilas heads out into the Gaatoranto countryside (time 12:36). It doesn't matter which enemies are used, so Davilas takes advantage of the easy Crabs in the river (time 13:56). He also puts a couple of his allies in reserve and tells the remaining ally not to do anything. The Whipping Boy ability puts Davilas in guard stance. While in guard stance, Davilas will jump in place of an attack directed at the ally as long as he is not too far away. You can hit the cancel button to exit from guard stance. Using an NPC Paladin as a partner works out pretty well.

During this exercise, Davilas reaches Warrior Level 23 (time 22:09). He gains 4 skill points. He puts them into the Warrior's Courage skill for a total of 36.

After a while, Davilas has gotten the needed number of blocks in (time 27:30).

Once this is done, he travels north to Zama Pass (time 30:05).

In Zama Pass, he heads west to a grave marker at B-8 (time 32:09). At the large marker on the western side, he must pray. After opening the emote meny by holding the cancel button, go to the third page and the eighth option (おいのり). If this is done correctly, a message will pop up.

Afterwards, Davilas zooms back to Gaatoranto (time 32:57). In the room at H-4 on the first floor, he talks with Strong again (time 34:48). The Paladin vocation is now unlocked!

A scene will then take place (time 35:55).

When the scene is over, Davilas begins to make his way out of the castle (time 38:45). Outside, he heads down the nearby flights of stairs to reach the train station (time 39:45).

In the station, he boards a train to the Elf capital, Kamiharumui, where he will unlock the Ranger vocation (time 40:36).

In the southeastern section of the city, he speaks with Mizuhiki in the Ranger Association at G-4 (time 43:26). Mizuhiki assigns Quest 099, the Ranger unlock quest. The objective for this quest is to steal an item from an onion-type monster in the Northern Kamiharumui countryside.

So, Davilas changes vocation to Level 29 Thief (time 44:46). He needs to have at least 8 skill points in the Thief's Acquisitiveness skill for the Steal ability (ぬすむ). He must be a Thief to use this ability.

He heads north into the Northern Kamiharumui countryside (time 45:50). The green onion men that he must steal from appear in the crop fields around C-3/C-4 (time 49:47). As before, it helps to turn support characters' AI off while trying to steal. I'm not certain if Davilas has to be the one to deal the final blow, but it can't hurt.

After a little trying, Davilas swipes the item he needs from the green onion man (time 54:51). The item appears to be a blue clump.

Back in the southeast of the city of Kamiharumui, he changes jobs to Level 16 Martial Artist (time 56:47).

Then, he reports to Mizuhiki at G-4 in the Ranger Association (time 57:37). With little ado, Davilas gains the ability to assume the Ranger vocation. The quest certainly wasn't as onerous as the Ranger unlock quest in Dragon Quest IX: killing Chimaeras with poison from Toxic Dagger.
