Dragon Quest IX Playthrough #198, Baramos Lv. 1 - 3
This is video #198 in my playthrough of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. This video does not contain commentary. To view the commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/mJHrPjEzpFY
When they completed Quest 062: Brian's Dyin' Wish, the party acquired 'Baramos's Map Lv. 1', their first legacy boss map. The legacy bosses are important bosses from earlier games in the series.
By request, the party will now check out the Baramos map. Fire-resistant equipment is highly recommended.
In my game, I found the entrance to Baramos's grotto in the swampy western portion of the Urdus Marshland (time 1:31).
In this grotto, the party finds none other than the Archfiend Baramos from Dragon Quest III (time 2:04). After the archfiend blusters, it is time to battle him. This battle can be quite a shock if you come unprepared soon after getting the Starflight Express. Baramos has powerful fire breath, single-target fire magic, and explosion magic. His physical attacks are fairly strong, and in fact, his criticals can do well over 350 points of damage to a party member. Yikes!
One of the healers should definitely have the 'Secrets of the Shield' tome, the Quest 088 prize, in inventory to block Baramos's criticals. Fire protection is very helpful to mitigate his fiery AOEs. Further protection from Kabuff, Insulatle, and Magic Barrier will also help. Baramos is weak to ice, so using the Frost Fource on physical attackers is a good idea. The person using Fource abilities will benefit from the 'Armamentalist Album', which allows him or her to cast Fource buffs on the entire party. Tension and attack boosts will also benefit the party until he starts using Disruptive Wave at Level 8.
Once Baramos is felled, the game reports the number of turns taken to beat him (time 10:19). Also, you have the opportunity to feed Baramos the experience points from the battle and level him up. It is a good idea to do so because he won't drop Murdaw's Map until he is Level 16. He will always drop a Mini Medal, and there is always a chance that he will drop a Silver Orb. That is why I was trying to steal from him.
When supplied with the experience points from the battle, Baramos reaches Level 2 (time 10:48).
The party receives Mini Medal #077 from him.
After leaving, the party must close up the map to reset the battle. They head off to Swinedimples for some free rest in the dorm.
Next, they fight Baramos at Level 2 (time 13:05). Again, this bad boy fails to feast on the innards of Heorot and his party.
After the battle, the party gives Baramos the experience from the fight (time 18:04). Baramos reaches Level 3. The party acquires Mini Medal #078.
When they have rested, the party fights Baramos at Level 3 (time 20:21). The main annoyance seems to be his critical attacks. Note that the Priest can use Omniheal and Fullheal without losing tension, though these are expensive spells.
At the end of the battle, the party gives Baramos the experience from the fight (time 25:29). Baramos reaches Level 4. The party acquires Mini Medal #079.
Questing will resume in the next episode.
Thanks for watching!
