You play as a dragon like in the first game and really nothing much has changed. There are some different weapon power ups which are great and there is also a charge shot if you don’t keep hold of the fire button. This is essential for some bosses.
There are actual difficulty options in this and you can choose up to 9 lives in a continue which is so much fairer than the last game with 2 lives max.
I still put the infinite continues cheat in but this was because I was expecting the last boss to ruin my run, which I was right. I still had to overcome the same challenge. It’s just if I had to start the game over again every time, I ran out of continues, it would have taken me days, which I’m not willing to do.
I played this shortly after the first game and the difficulty has been culled slightly. But I’m only referring to the last boss.
The entire game is pretty much the same difficulty. The bosses are harder but since you can have more lives, you get more attempts from the last checkpoint rather than having to do the entire level again.
The checkpoints before the boss could really do with being closer as it’s usually a slow slog to get back to the boss after you die. The last boss is ridiculous again but it is doable with the tools that it provides you. In the last game, you have to be very lucky that you get the right power ups before getting to the boss and not get hit and lose your power ups too (which is very rare).
At least on this you are guaranteed to get the speed up power up which is vital to beating it. Even with it though, I died multiple times and every time, you have to do a long and arduous journey back to the boss. It’s made even more tedious and pointless since it is no challenge and super slow.
What’s worse is that once you lose your continue, you have to go back to the previous level which is super slow as it’s just a power up collecting level with no danger. But you will most likely lose your power ups by the time you get to the last boss. I didn’t lose mine on my final attempt so it was actually useful and made the boss easier but I would still rather not have to do that again.
It took me 1.5 hrs to do the first 8 levels, then 2.5 hrs to do the last one. I hate it when these old games do this.
Still a decent game and the bosses are very impressive.
