REVIEW:
After the very nice looking loading screen you are presented for an extremely cool intro and after that you have to make some selections on the menu before starting to race. When looking in your garage you will see all of your cars in full 3D rotating perspective, and all of the cars is also represented like this on the tracks – it is possible to make them spin 360 degrees on the tracks. The amount of details put into these cars is incredible …and impressive!

You have to race as fast as possible (off course!) and to do that you have to drift through the turns. To do this you have to steer the car into the drift when entering the turns, now slam the gas pedal to the floor and turn the steering wheel to the opposite direction! But in this game drifting is not just drifting – No, no, no, there is countless numbers of ways to perform a drift depending on your speed and the angel of approaching the turn, and when drifting through a turn you can also release the gas pedal a split second before activating it again which, if done correct several times, will give you a longer more softly curved drift. Also entering the turn, releasing the gas pedal, slamming the brakes, and then activating the drift will give you a much sharper drift!

When drifting you have a drift-o-meter on the top of the screen. Depending on how long time you drift you will get a comment on this where “Impossible drift” is the best you can get, and for these different drifts you will score points that you have to use for your final score after the race. Your final score after each race is your time bonus + your drifting bonus. Hitting the cones or, driving the wrong way around the cones, or not being under the target time limit will give you some negative point score. You win different amounts of money depending on your final place in the races, and you have to spend money for: Repairs, preparing, starting fee, buyin new cars.

There is 6 stages but the real challenge is in stage 4: Saransk, Russia! Here you have to drive on ice on small compact tracks with narrow passages between containers and lots of sharp turns is making your day tough! Stage 5 and 6 is a piece of cake compared to this.

This is a kick ass game and it is brilliant fun to have to drive like a rotten tomato. It takes some time to learn to master the drifting but once you get into it it works really well, and it is absolutely incredible that a full 3D driving game like this has been crammed into a Spectrum! The cars has an incredible amount of details and a lot of different angles they are viewed from, all the tracks has nice detailed graphics with great scaling effects and scrolling backgrounds. The music and sound fx is super with good engine sounds and sampled speech.

Some minor problems is: You see a map of the track before the race and you also have a mini-map/radar when racing, but on some of the tracks it is still kind of hard to find the correct way, so it would be a good thing to make a Multiface dump before some of the later tracks if playing on real hardware, or make a snapshot if playing in an emulator. Nearly all of the time you are driving fast but if you have lost nearly all your speed, or are holding still, the car is actually quite difficult to control, and when you try to turn with almost no speed when giving some gas it will go into drift. You get disqualified if you go off the track but some places you are allowed to get pretty much outside and other places you are disqualified immediately.

I have only recorded the intro with RF artifact colors but if you play the game on a real Spectrum with a CRT TV there will be some extra colors in game!

This is a high tech high quality car racing game with hours and hours of entertainment where the impossible has been made possible on the ZX Spectrum. Everything about this game is stunning and top class from the beginning with the loading screen to the end of the game. Be sure to check this one out!
