God...Dammit...why...

Welcome to our first pure review of a Genesis game, and unfortunately it happens to be of one of the WORST fighting games that we have ever come across.

Originally created for the PC, this title was known as Tongue of the Fatman on DOS and Mondu's Fight Palace on the Commodore 64. The version we played was on the Genesis, where it was released in 1990 for the Mega Drive in Japan, and later in the US in 1991. It is a PvP 2D fighter that pre-dates SFII, so it does not have the advantage of having that to copy. Can this game stand out on it's own?

This game was developed my Razorsoft, which published a number of early fighting games for the system. While none of the games were hits, it does hold a place in history for making surprisingly violent video games long before Mortal Kombat. It only released 5 games for the Genesis, and stopped working for Sega all together after 1993.

Short answer...no. Unfortunately this game shows many of the same problems that other early fighters do, those being clunky controls and a horribly unfair enemy A.I. This game uses a 3 button control scheme, but don't think that pulling off moves will be easy. To be honest, neither Brian nor Jim could get any moves to work, or at least consistently. The controls overall are just terrible, and are hard to describe. You really need to need to play it to really know. Well, don't play this, you are better off not knowing.

The best part of the game is the character design, which is really interesting. They, of course, have wacky pun-filled names for the characters, but that is the only bad side. There are character designs here that you will not find in many other games, especially for the time. Not only that, the characters stay very detailed mid game, and have a bunch of animations for each attack, for falling down, for turning around, etc. The most love was put into the characters.

The background designs, while interesting, are limited. You get a few different levels, about 4 in total, and two of them are pallet swaps. Also, the color schemes leave a lot to be desired, keeping it very simple and not putting a lot detail into it either. Also, you get one cut scene in the beginning to explain the story, but that is not pleasing to the eyes. Even the shark that feeds after each fight looks ridiculous. Well...the green shark...

The gameplay actually wins some points for originality. You win money for each fight, and can use this money to buy powerups and to control your stats. You can give your player more attack power, more health, or extra powers. It is a surprisingly unique feature for a game like this to have at the time, and wins points there. It is a shame because with how original it is, it REALLY misses the mark with controls and hit detection. The hit detection is really bad too, and it takes away from the game. Also, each player maybe has one attack that is easy to spam, and fights will just turn into each player spamming each other.

Overall, this is a really disappointing game. We have played bad games, a lot of them, but this is one of those games that had so much potential. It does a lot of things that you would not see until years later, including excessive violence, powerups, and attributes that you can change up. It really is a game that could have been legendary, but the control and gameplay overall is just so bad that it destroys everything the originality strived to do.

If you have to play this game, you need a drink that is strong in two areas: strong and cheap. With that being said, you may need to forgo the standard ales and get some Steel Reserve. It will mess you up fast, and costs about 3 bucks for a 40oz bottle.
