They're like trapdoors... but more so. What previously would take multiple trapdoors, orbs or force arrows, is now accomplished within the space of a single tile. Scientific progress keeps going! There's some neat variants on trapdoors too beyond the obvious "multi-use" - including several that stay solid for an indeterminate period of time, as long as you keep fulfilling conditions, and only later turn into regular old single-use drop trapdoors.

If you ever wanted a tool that forces Beethro to step off of a tile both diagonally and orthogonally, look no farther.
