Ducktales Remastered (Extreme Mode) - Part 1: Scrooge's Vault
XBL Gamertag: MetalSmasher86
The long-awaited remake of the Disney/Capcom classic Duck Tales has finally made its way to Xbox 360 a month later after its Wii U, PS3, and Steam release.
Compared to the original, this game has two brand-new stages, a new difficulty setting, expanded stages, improved boss fights, remixed version of all the original music (and even a few new tunes), and all sorts of easter eggs you can unlock with the cash you collect throughout the game. There's even an easter egg that lets you swim in Scrooge's money bin just like the intro to the TV show!
The pogo mechanics have been simplified from the original version, but if you're a purist or you just like the extra challenge, you can turn on the "Hard Pogo" option to make it play more like the original.
There are two main things that critics have slammed this game for. The first is the difficulty. Granted this game is considerably harder than the original, but that is not a bad thing. Like I've said multiple times before, it's the good kind of difficulty where your death is your own fault and not the game's. It makes you hone your skills until you finally conquer it and it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finally do. Also, boo-hoo if you have to restart a stage from the beginning if you lose all your lives. In the original you had to restart the entire game if you lost all your lives. Does that make the original version horrible too? I didn't think so. Simply put, it's a throwback to a retro game, and they treated the difficulty as such.
The other main complaint is the cutscenes slowing down the game. To me, this just adds to the story and makes me feel like I'm playing a lost episode of the cartoon, and I loved the cartoon as a kid.
For this playthrough I will be playing on the unlockable Extreme difficulty setting. What makes it extreme? Well:
1. The game does not save your progress until you beat the game, kind of like the original which doesn't have a save feature at all.
2. The Hard Pogo mechanic is always on and you can't turn it off.
3. Health refills have been drastically reduced.
Also, I will be including the cutscenes in this playthrough, but if you wish to skip them I will provide fast-forward annotations so you don't have to watch them if you don't have to.
Part 1 covers the intro stage in Scrooge's Vault.
